Celtic’s Champions League progress could be key to the future of striker Odsonne Edouard, according to The Athletic.
In an article about the Hoops written by Celtic correspondent Kieran Devlin on their chase for a 10th Premiership title in a row, many issues surrounding the Glasgow club were addressed, including Edouard and what the future might hold for him.
It was claimed that the Hoops’ adventure in the UEFA Champions League in the 2020/21 season is important for Edouard when it comes to whether he can make the cut for the French national team soon enough. The piece also revealed that it is ‘unclear’ if Celtic’s Champions League campaign will impact his future at Parkhead or not.
Will Edouard stay at Celtic beyond the 2020/21 season?
No chance
Yes, he will stay
The piece stated that Edouard looked ‘sullen’ after Celtic’s loss to Cluj in the Champions League qualifiers last season.
The report reads: “The Athletic understands that the Champions League is hugely important to Edouard for example, particularly in how it would benefit his claim to a place with the senior France set-up with the Euros on the horizon, though how decisive a factor qualification for the group stage might be in his staying or leaving this summer is unclear.”
TIF Thoughts…
Edouard has been linked with a move to the likes of Arsenal and Leicester City in recent months, but French club Monaco had an approach rejected for the striker as well. Even Newcastle United were said to be keeping tabs on the former Paris Saint-Germain man.
In the 2019/20 season, Edouard found the net 27 times in all competitions and even racked up 19 assists in all competitions. He scored 21 times in the league and finished as the highest scorer in the Premiership last season as well.
It shows why Edouard will have a key role to play in the club’s Champions League campaign this season and if he fires, Celtic will benefit from it. It will certainly be good for the club if that helps them keep hold of the Frenchman for a longer period of time.
