The Athletic reporter Tim Spiers has provided an update regarding how Wolverhampton Wanderers are progressing in the summer transfer window.
Last season, the Old Gold spent £109.62m on incoming transfers and sealed the arrival of nine players on a permanent basis and one on loan (per Transfermarkt).
So far this summer, though, the Old Gold have only signed one player in the form of Matija Sarkic on a free transfer from Aston Villa.
In the latest episode of The Athletic’s The Molineux View podcast, Spiers discussed how the club was progressing with their business in the transfer window.
He said: “[It is] still too early [for any news on incoming players]. [They are] still figuring out their options and their priorities. There’s a lot of work to do in terms of outgoings – lots of loans to sort out.
“In terms of incomings, Wolves don’t really do a lot of signings, do they? We know that Nuno wants a tiny squad, still. That hasn’t changed.
“It’s still going to be 17/18/19 senior players unless he has a major change of heart, but I’ve heard him speak passionately about that subject time and again.
“In which case, players have got to leave as well if they’re going to keep this tight-knit squad. People on the fringes – Max Kilman, Morgan Gibbs-White, [Bruno] Jordao, [Leonardo] Campana – if they’re going to bring players in, there’s got to be a shift and some of these players have got to go out, either on loan or permanently. So, quite a lot of work to do in not a very big space of time.”
TIF Thoughts…
Judging from what Spiers had to say, seemingly, Wolves fans can expect to see players leave the club on loan or permanently before any are brought in.
Do you wish Nuno Espirito Santo did not have a preference for a small squad?
Yes, it causes problems
No, it's not an issue
Certainly, with Raul Jimenez being the only out-and-out striker still at the club to have made an appearance for the Old Gold last season (per WhoScored), centre-forward could be a key area for Wolves to strengthen in.
However, supporters will just have to wait and see what the transfer window brings.
