The Athletic’s Tim Spiers has been discussing Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Portuguese attacker Diogo Jota.

The £25.2m-rated forward has been situated at Molineux since the summer of 2017 having arrived on loan from Atletico Madrid before the move became permanent a year later for £12.6m (per Transfermarkt).

In the most recent Premier League season, Jota bagged seven goals and just one assist for the Old Gold in 34 appearances (per WhoScored).

His return of eight goal contributions landed the 23-year-old winger a 6.76/10 average rating which made him Wolves’ ninth-best performing player in the league.

However, in the latest episode of The Athletic’s The Molineux View podcast, Spiers aired some criticism of the Portuguese forward when analysing his goal record.

To kick-off this quiz on Nuno Espirito Santo on the hard side, which club was his first game on the touchline at Molineux against?

He said: “I think [he scored] 16 overall in 48 [matches], including [the] Europa [League], boosted by a couple of hat-tricks there.

“One assist in the league is very, very poor. He’s too streaky, he needs consistency now. He can be a legend, but he needs consistency now.”

Spiers later went on to say: “His season has been interesting. He’s scored 16 in all competitions, but he’s been very streaky with his goals.

“He’s tailed off a bit towards the end [of the season], to the extent where he was second-sub against Sevilla – not only did he not start, he didn’t come on until 10 minutes from the end.

“I mean, I think he’s an absolute superstar in the making, still.”

TIF Thoughts…

As can be seen in what Spiers had to say, he still believes that Jota has the potential to a Wolves “legend”, however, this season he has not been consistent enough.

Has consistency been a problem for Diogo Jota this season?

Yes, it's fair criticism

No I think that's unfair

Looking at the attacker’s statistics in the most recent season compared to the 2018/19 term highlights what the journalist had to say.

During the 2018/19 term, Jota scored nine goals and assisted five in the Premier League and earned an average rating of 6.89/10 (per WhoScored).

Those statistics easily better his seven goals and one assist with an average rating of 6.76/10 in the league in the most recent term.

So, hopefully, next season, Jota can get back to playing in the form which he managed during the 2018/19 campaign.
