Wolves Fancast pundit Jordan Russell has been discussing Wolverhampton Wanderers’ finances and his thoughts on why the club should invest.

During the 2019/20 season, the Old Gold plunged £109.62m into incoming transfers and, ultimately, only finished two points better off in the Premier League than in the 2018/19 season (per Transfermarkt).

It was also announced earlier this month that Nuno Espirito Santo’s outfit had been punished by UEFA after failing to meet their Financial Fair Play target (per BBC).

So, in the latest episode of the Wolves Fancast, Russell discussed the club’s finances and aired his belief that Wolves need to invest in the squad further.

To kick-off this quiz on Nuno Espirito Santo on the hard side, which club was his first game on the touchline at Molineux against?

He said: “We’ve got to invest to [break into the top four] and with FFP and all that sort of stuff, maybe we need to sell one to actually take us to that next level.

“Which is why I do think that we will lose [Raul] Jimenez. If £80m comes on the table, I think they’ll look at that and go, ‘Right, we’re going to add that to what we’ve got as our budget and we’re going to try and just invest.’

“It seemed like Nuno, it was sort of at the end of that Sevilla game, was like, ‘Well, we need to spend and you need to back me’.

“He’s only got 12 months left on his contract, so, if we don’t back the project or match Nuno’s ambitions, he could walk into any big club, couldn’t he? Let’s be honest with you.

“So, if we don’t match [his ambition], I think he’d quite easily walk and he’d get snapped up pretty quickly.”

TIF Thoughts…

As can be seen in what Russell had to say, he clearly believes that Wolves need to back Nuno Santo in the transfer market and to do that they may have to sell a star player.

Do you think Wolves should sell a star player to invest in the squad?

No, that's not necessary

Yes, would be a good idea

The player the pundit listed was Jimenez, who has been linked with several big-name clubs which he has discussed in an interview with Bolavip (via Tuttosport).

However, it remains to be seen if any club will offer the £80m figure that the pundit touted to sign the Mexican from the Old Gold.

While the 29-year-old striker does have three years left on his contract with Wolves, a market value of £36m according to Transfermarkt would suggest that £80m may be over the odds.
