Football.london journalists Alasdair Gold and Rob Guest recently took part in a Facebook live video, in which they discussed the latest goings-on at Tottenham Hotspur and answered questions from fans regarding transfers and the upcoming 2020/21 season.

One topic of discussion on the video was a potential Spurs move for Barcelona striker Luis Suarez. The Uruguayan has reportedly been told by new Barcelona boss Ronald Koeman that he can leave the Nou Camp this summer, so it is perhaps unsurprising that the two journalists were questioned as to whether he could join the Lilywhites during the video, considering the striker issues that Spurs faced last season and that saw their Comeon 2020 odds for under 2.5 goals to regularly be very short.

However, both Guest and Gold were quick to rule out Spurs’ chances of signing the 33-year-old this summer during the video, with Guest first saying:

“I think that’s basically just come from the decision the other day, Ronald Koeman’s basically told him ‘you’re no longer needed at Barcelona’, so he’s available. Yes, he’d be a great signing, an absolutely fantastic signing. He’s proved over the past few years, even though he’s getting on now, that he knows where the back of the net is. Again, I think the problem you’re gonna have is the wages, he will want massive money. I just don’t think it’s gonna be doable.”

Gold then adds his thoughts on the forward, saying: (32:29)

“It’s ironically a player Spurs turned down signing back when was at Ajax. Martin Jol recommended him to Spurs and I think it was [Harry] Redknapp at the time they just didn’t quite decide that he was what they wanted. That was a cracking move. Yeah, wages, we’re talking [Gareth] Bale [level], I don’t think he earns quite as much as Bale, but we’re still talking double what the likes of [Harry] Kane earns. It’s a lovely idea but no I don’t think Spurs will bite on that one.”

TIF Thoughts…

Both journalists agree that Suarez’s wages would prove to be the main stumbling block should Spurs actually register an interest in the 33-year-old this summer.

Are you disappointed that Spurs most likely won't be able to afford Suarez's wages?

However, considering that he was still able to score 21 goals in all competitions for the Catalan club last season; averaging a 7.33 rating for his performances in La Liga (per Whoscored), it seems fair to suggest that he would be an excellent addition to Jose Mourinho’s squad.
