In comments made in a video that was recently uploaded to his YouTube channel, Alasdair Gold discussed Tottenham Hotspur’s left-back situation, and whether or not he believed the club would be looking to sign a player in that position this summer.

Following a season in which Spurs eventually finished in a disappointing sixth place in the Premier League, much has been discussed regarding in which positions the club need to strengthen over the summer in order to improve next term.

One of the positions mentioned is at left-back, with Ryan Sessegnon apparently looking likely to be heading out on loan next season and Danny Rose also being sold this summer in an ‘ideal scenario’ for Jose Mourinho.

However, speaking recently on a video posted to his YouTube channel, Gold said he would be surprised if the club spent money on a new left-back this summer, as the Spurs boss has a number of options in the position already, one of which is Sessegnon, who Gold says Mourinho sees similar traits to Ashley Cole in.

He said: “I think he’ll be quite happy with his left-back [options] at the moment. You’ve got Ben Davies for the experience, who’s a solid player [and] can play at centre-back. Ryan Sessegnon – he eventually wants him to become a left-back, [Mourinho] sees similar traits [in Sessegnon] with Ashley Cole. And they’ve been delighted with Dennis Cirkin – very talented young left-back, only 18.

“I think with those three – and you’ve also got [Japhet] Tanganga who can play there, at a push – I think he’s probably not going to be desperate for a left-back. I’d be surprised if they go out and spend money when they’re looking to prioritise elsewhere on the pitch.”

TIF Thoughts…

While Gold makes a claim about Mourinho likening Sessegnon to Ashley Cole, it has been reported that the Spurs boss is actually considering sending the 20-year-old out on loan ahead of next season, meaning that the club would only be left with Ben Davies and Danny Rose as senior first-team left-backs next term, the latter of whom the club are said to be hoping to sell.

As such, in our opinion, Spurs should keep hold of Sessegnon this summer and actually give the player who they signed for £24.30 million last year a shot at playing in the position, as last term, out of his 12 appearances in all competitions, he featured from left-back just three times.
