Who scored Southampton's first goal of the season?

After it was recently reported by Sky Germany (via Sky Sports) that McKennie is interested in joining Southampton in a deal that could be worth £20 million, Ogden shared his thoughts on this potential move.

He said: “Southampton would be a good move, they’re a good club. They’re a progressive club and they need a midfielder, having just sold [Pierre-Emile] Hojbjerg to Tottenham.

“If you’re a player that’s looking to move to the Premier League and you want to prove yourself, Southampton is a great club, because they give people a chance and the spotlight isn’t too intense there; the expectation isn’t too high. If McKennie can get a move to Southampton, he’s done really well, and I think they’re a club that would look at that sort of deal.”

The 21-year-old central midfielder, who is currently valued at £18 million, joined Schalke’s U19 squad back in 2016 on a free transfer.

Since making his senior debut for Schalke back in 2017, McKennie has gone on to make 91 appearances for the German club in which he has scored five goals and provided seven assists along the way.

The 2019/20 Bundesliga season saw McKennie make 28 league appearances for Schalke, in which he earned himself a season rating of 6.78/10 (per WhoScored).

TIF Thoughts…

With Southampton having sold Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg to Tottenham Hotspur, as Ogden mentioned in the video, the Saints could well be looking for someone to come in and replace the departed Dane in the coming weeks.

It will be interesting to see if Southampton do see McKennie as a suitable replacement for Hojbjerg and make the move for the 21-year-old this summer.
