The Sheffield Star recently published a report claiming that Sheffield United are ‘in pole position’ to sign ex-Chelsea midfielder John Swift, who currently plays for Championship side Reading.

Swift is a Chelsea academy graduate but the 25-year-old central midfielder has been at Reading since the summer of 2016. The £3.6m-rated man enjoyed an impressive 2019/20 campaign, scoring six goals and providing 10 assists in 41 Championship appearances. This made the midfielder Reading’s joint-third-highest goalscorer and highest assist provider for the most recent Championship season.

The former Chelsea man also earned the highest overall rating (7.22) of any Reading player for the 2019/20 Championship season, according to WhoScored.

With that in mind, it may be fair to say that the 25-year-old is coming off the back of an impressive season and it mightn’t be too surprising to see that Swift has reportedly attracted interest from the Premier League, with Sheffield United said to be ‘in pole position’ to secure the midfielder’s signature this summer, according to The Sheffield Star, who also claim that ‘a number of other top-flight clubs are waiting to pounce’ should the Blades and Reading fail to come to an agreement on the 25-year-old’s transfer.

This article from The Sheffield Star also states that Swift ‘has signalled his desire to move north,’ indicating that this is a deal that could get done provided the two clubs can agree on a transfer fee.

TIF Thoughts…

In addition to being Reading’s highest-rated player for the 2019/20 Championship season according to WhoScored, the stats website gave just 12 Championship players to have played more than the average number of games in England’s second-tier in the most recent season a higher overall rating than Swift.

This indicates that Swift may have been one of the Championship’s standout players during the 2019/20 season and it may be understandable why the Blades seem to believe that he is ready to make the step up to England’s top-flight.
