Steve Wraith has been speaking on a recent edition of his NUFC Matters show, discussing the failed takeover of Newcastle United.

To get things started a rather easy one. Who scored Newcastle's first league goal of the season?

Wraith spent a bit of time talking about everything around the takeover, and he also spoke about Henry Mauriss, claiming that Toon fans are sceptical about the American’s bid – suggesting that many feel the emergence of his approach to take over the club was, in fact, a ‘red herring’ deployed by current owner Mike Ashley.

Here is what Wraith had to say about Mauriss:

“There seemed to be a lot of faith in that [Mauriss] deal going through by one journalist over here from The Telegraph, Luke Edwards.

“He’s, in fact, championed Henry Mauriss over the PCP bid, but four weeks on, and we’ve heard nothing from Henry, and a lot of people feel as if that’s a red herring that’s being thrown in, potentially by Mike Ashley, almost to kick the Premier League up the backside to try and hurry them up during the process.”

So, while we don’t think there was any need to mention Edwards, it is clear that Wraith and many people feel as if Mauriss is not a genuine bidder for the club.

Do you think Mauriss is a red herring?

Yes, he has already disappeared

No, he will be sorting something out

TIF Thoughts…

Wraith mentions Edwards, who has claimed that Mauriss’ bid is genuine.

Still, Mauriss’ interest was first reported in April by the Daily Mirror, and the Mirror have also claimed that the American was set a deadline by Ashley and that he was still interested in buying the club earlier this month.

So, maybe mentioning Edwards was a bit harsh considering the Mirror have also pushed Mauriss’ interest.

It has been claimed that Ashley is losing patience with the American after he was told he has a clear run to buy the club now that the Amanda Staveley bid has been withdrawn, but as of yet, nothing has happened.

So, it seems as if Wraith and the people he references could be right, and the American might be nothing more than a red herring.
