Liam Kennedy has been on a recent edition of #NUFC Matters, where he has been discussing many things relating to Newcastle United, and one of the topics that he spent a lot of time on was transfers.

To get things started a rather easy one. Who scored Newcastle's first league goal of the season?

One player who came up in this discussion was Danny Welbeck.

The 29-year-old has been linked with Newcastle in the past, but he hasn’t been linked this summer, as of yet, but that didn’t stop Kennedy from revealing his thoughts on the former Manchester United man.

It seems as if Kennedy likes Welbeck, but his injury record and lack of fitness mean that, in his opinion, the Toon should be looking at other options.

He said: “He’s not a player I would go for.

“Newcastle United, in the position they’re at, they don’t want to be signing strikers who are only going to play 10-12 games in a season, they need to sign somebody who is going to play week in, week out, that’s going to provide them with some kind of goal threat.

“Danny Welbeck when fit and firing is an excellent Premier League centre forward, but he’s never fit, and he hasn’t been, and that’s why he’s at Watford, and that’s why his team got relegated because if he’d been fit and firing for Watford last season, he would have kept them up.

“I wouldn’t touch him with a bargepole.”

Would you like to sign Welbeck?

TIF Thoughts…

According to Transfermarkt, Welbeck has missed 123 games due to injury since he moved from Manchester United to Arsenal in 2014 and last season for Watford he managed to play just 18 league games in which he scored two goals, which is not the best record.

However, the 29-year-old, who is valued at £4.95m by Transfermarkt, has got a decent Premier League goalscoring record, and if he could stay fit, he may be worth signing.

The Toon, though, already have Andy Carroll, who has suffered a fair number of injuries, so maybe Kennedy is right, and Newcastle should look at someone else.
