A lot of Newcastle United fans have replied to a post from Liam Kennedy that quote-tweeted a post from Miles Starforth which contained a link to an article by the Shields Gazette reporter in which he claimed that Dwight Gayle would have a big role to play for the Toon this season.

To get things started a rather easy one. Who scored Newcastle's first league goal of the season?

However, it is the fact that Steve Bruce did not insist that he was definitely looking to sign a striker that caused Kennedy to tweet.

He claimed that the Toon cannot go into the 2020/21 season without signing a striker, and if they are pinning all of their hopes on Gayle, then there could be trouble because he scored just four goals in the 2019/20 season.

This post drew these Toon fans’ attention, who are worried that Newcastle will not sign a striker.

Do Newcastle need another striker?

Yes, that has to be our priority

No, we don't need one

No, we don't need one

This tweet came before the Toon played Crewe Alexandra in a friendly that saw Newcastle win 3-0 but also saw Gayle limp off injured, though it is unclear how bad the injury is this could make the Toon’s need for a striker even more desperate.

Many Newcastle fans don’t even want to think about what might happen if they don’t sign a striker.

Newcastle have a minimal budget of £35m plus player sales, and they have been linked with moves for the likes of Callum Wilson and Patrik Schick and considering that between them, the Toon’s strikers scored just six league goals last season, it is clear that Newcastle need a striker and can’t just rely on Gayle as Bruce hinted was possible.

They certainly can’t rely on him if he is injured, so we can see why these Toon fans and Kennedy are angry, and they will just have to hope that Newcastle see sense and do sign a striker in this transfer window.
