Fans of Newcastle United have been reacting to a post on Twitter, in which the Labour MP for Wansbeck, Ian Lavery, called for accountability regarding Newcastle United’s failed takeover bid.
His tweet, which included a video of Lavery giving an interview to Sky Sports, stated that ‘football fans need a voice in their sport’ and also that he believed ‘it’s time for accountability, democracy and respect at all levels of our game’.
In reaction to his post, fans of Newcastle flocked to have their say on the matter, with many praising Lavery for his comments, while others took aim at the Premier League, whom they believe to be corrupt.
Well said, shame no national press are picking up on this like they did when a couple of MPs lobbied against the takeover. Far too many agendas.

Its INCREDIBLY disrespectful towards MP’s that the @premierleague haven’t even acknowledged receipt of letters from over 40 MP’s let alone one! It kind of also hints at the corruption within, that they are happy to just ignore everyone. #ItsNotGoingAway #nufc #TogetherWeWin

You’ve been a credit to the cause Ian. If there’s anything you can do to take the matter further I’m sure the vast majority of us will support you.

The cause for Lavery’s comments stems from the Premier League’s silence regarding Newcastle’s proposed £300 million, Saudi Arabian-backed takeover bid, which sat with the Premier League for over three months before the consortium behind the bid pulled out of the deal, giving the reason for their withdrawal as the ‘unforeseeably prolonged process’ of their bid.
Do you believe there is still hope for the takeover?
Yes
No
The Premier League refused to give a timescale on anything, so, as MPs, you should give the PL a timescale for a response otherwise they should be summoned before a select committee pending a full independent investigation into their conduct during the takeover

It makes me feel like the premier league is still in talks with the buyers so they can’t say nothing just seems strange why there’s no comment yet.

Get the @premierleague in front of a Digital, Culture, Media & Sport committee to explain themselves, they’re blatantly ignoring the elected representatives of this country.

In any case, it appears as if these Newcastle fans are fully behind Lavery in his calls for the Premier League to give a reason as to why they took so long in assessing Newcastle’s now failed takeover bid.
However, considering how long the league have gone without making a comment on the matter, we wouldn’t suggest for them to hold their breath.
