Pundit Phil Egan has recently made a claim about Manchester United’s chase of Borussia Dortmund star Jadon Sancho.

Egan was recently a guest on OTB AM’s Deal or no Deal segment and one potential transfer that he talked about was Sancho and the reports linking him with a move to Man United. Egan believes that if United don’t sign Sancho and if the club doesn’t start the Premier League season well, the Red Devils will quickly be making ‘plenty of excuses’.

Can you score 20/20 on this Premier League quiz? Starting off easy, who is the top scorer in the Premier League this season?

The Daily Mirror has recently reported that the Red Devils are ‘ready to give up’ on their chase of Sancho and they ‘have been unable’ to agree a fee with Dortmund for the Englishman. As a result, they are ‘ready to abandon’ their pursuit of Sancho until the next summer transfer window.

When talking about the possibility that United indeed have given up on their chase of Sancho, Egan said that the club would be making excuses about their failure to sign the player if their season doesn’t start well.

He said: “If there isn’t an excuse, there’s going to be plenty of excuses if things don’t start well for United. This is the problem that if United don’t hit the ground running, and obviously we know they’re not playing on the opening weekend because of their involvement in the latter stages of the Europa League, but as soon as things start to go wrong or if you have a few bad results then all of a sudden, the name Jadon Sancho comes up more and more.

Is Man Utd's move for Sancho dead in the water?

Yes, we won't sign him

Yes, we won't sign him

No, we'll sign him

No, we'll sign him

“Obviously, this was a deal that a few weeks ago looked like it was going to get done and they didn’t get to that deadline of the 10th of August, which Borussia Dortmund had set. So now it drags on and it looks like it’s not going to happen and we know how good he is and if United don’t hit the ground running, then United supporters, people will start questioning Ed Woodward and he’ll have to answer those questions and explain why they didn’t feel [that] Jadon Sancho was worth the money.”

TIF Thoughts…

Sancho had an impressive 2019/20 campaign with Dortmund as he contributed to 34 goals in 32 Bundesliga appearances for the German club.

Fabrizio Romano has already confirmed that ‘personal terms have never been a problem’ for United and Sancho but no agreement has been reached between the two clubs yet. So this seems to be a case of whether United want to match Dortmund’s valuation of Sancho or not.

The Englishman is one of the ‘highest priority‘ targets for United this season and going by his numbers, signing him could be quite a coup for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side. Not signing him though, could prove to be frustrating since strengthening in the right-wing position is said to be a priority for the Red Devils this summer.
