Alex Stewart discussed Manchester City’s midfield during a recent edition of Tifo Football’s Sensible Transfers show.

The football writer has shared his view on who would be the ideal player to fill the defensive midfield position for Pep Guardiola’s side, given that Fernandinho has just one year remaining on his contract, is 35 years old and has played the majority of his recent football in a central defensive position.

Man City fan? We bet you can't get 100% on this Yaya Toure quiz. We'll start you off with an easy one... Who did Yaya Toure sign for City from back in 2010?

The player identified by Stewart was Leicester City’s Wilfred Ndidi, here is what he had to say about the 23-year-old:

“I think, as a defensive midfielder, you’re looking for somebody who can win the ball back, who can screen, who is energetic, good at pressing, good at tackling, all that kind of stuff. In the Premier League, it’s Wilfred Ndidi. He is the outstanding player in that position in the Premier League at the moment.”

TIF Thoughts…

Ndidi played a key role for Leicester City last season, making 32 appearances in the English top-flight as they managed to secure a fifth-place finish, just four points outside of the UEFA Champions League qualification spots.

According to Transfermarkt, the player’s value stands at £40.5m, £24.66m more than what the Foxes paid to sign the player from KRC Genk in 2017.

The Nigerian midfielder’s performances during the 2019/20 campaign earned him an average performance rating of 7.23/10, making him Brendan Rodgers’ third most consistent performer. Based on the above, it is clear the player has progressed during his time in the Premier League and therefore, it’s difficult to argue with Stewart when he suggests Ndidi would be a good fit for Man City.
