Liverpool journalist Simon Hughes has been discussing Reds midfielder Fabinho and his role in Jurgen Klopp’s team.

This comes after Hughes recently made an appearance on The Athletic’s Liverpool-themed podcast, The Red Agenda, where he spoke about a range of topics related to the Merseyside club.

On the subject of Fabinho, Hughes had this to say about the Brazilian.

He said: “If you look at the way Klopp picks the team, in the big games he’s always the main one in the middle of the three, isn’t he? I mean, people have spoken about him dropping back defensively and might not need to go and sign a centre-half but I think you’d lose a lot if he wasn’t there.

“I just think that the amount of possession that he wins, I think his form did improve, having been out for such a long time, after lockdown, you could see in those first few games he was right at it. I mean, I think he’s the one who is undroppable.”

Liverpool signed the midfielder back in 2018 from French side AS Monaco for a fee of £40.5 million. Since then, the 26-year-old, who is currently valued at £50.4 million, has made 80 appearances for the Reds in which he’s grabbed himself three goals and provided six assists for his Liverpool teammates (per Transfermarkt).

While predominantly playing as a defensive midfielder, Fabinho has played as a centre-half and a right-back at times in his career.

TIF Thoughts…

Hughes saying that Fabinho is the one player from this Liverpool side who should never be dropped is certainly very high praise for the midfield man.

Apart from the games he missed through injury last year, the fact that the Brazilian was only named as an unused substitute twice throughout Liverpool’s 2019/20 Premier League campaign shows that Klopp also sees Fabinho as an integral part of his current crop of players.
