Liverpool journalist Paul Gorst has been discussing Reds midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum and his future at the Merseyside club.

This comes after Gorst recently made an appearance on the Liverpool Echo’s Blood Red Podcast where he spoke about the latest news topics concerning Jurgen Klopp’s side at the moment.

2018/19 season quiz: How many points did Jurgen Klopp's side accumulate in the Premier League?

On the subject of Wijnaldum and his future at Liverpool, this is what Gorst had to say on the matter.

He said: “There’s no active contract talks with Gini Wijnaldum at the moment, which is a little bit of a concern when you think of how important he is to Liverpool’s squad, [to] Liverpool’s team under Jurgen Klopp.

“I think he played 37 times in the Premier League last season, I think it was Bournemouth the only game, away, that he missed so he’s obviously one of the first names on the team sheet and with no active talks that would suggest that he’s not going to be offered a new deal and he could feasibly leave as a free agent next season in the same way Emre Can did.

“Hopefully that can be resolved but at the moment you have to kind of accept that if there are no talks then that is the case.”

Liverpool signed Wijnaldum from fellow Premier League side Newcastle United back in 2016 for a fee of £24.75 million.

Since then, the 29-year-old, who is currently valued at £36 million, has made a total of 186 appearances for the Reds across all competitions in which he has managed to score 19 goals and provide 16 assists along the way.

The 2019/20 season saw the Dutchman make a total of 47 appearances for Liverpool, with 37 of them coming in the Premier League (per Transfermarkt).

One of Wijnaldum’s highlights at Liverpool came back in 2019. After coming on as a substitute, the midfielder scored two of Liverpool’s goals during their 4-0 Champions League win over Barcelona.

At this moment in time, Wijnaldum’s current contract at Liverpool runs out at the end of June 2021.

TIF Thoughts…

With Wijnaldum only missing one Premier League match last season, he is clearly an important figure for Klopp who would assumingly not want to lose the midfielder.

It will be interesting to see if Wijnaldum pens a new deal at Liverpool or if he leaves the club either this summer or when his current contract runs out next year.
