LFC Daytrippers contributor Grizz Khan has been discussing the future of Georginio Wijnaldum during a recent edition of the podcast.

The midfielder signed for the Reds back in July 2016 from Newcastle United in a deal reportedly worth £24.75m (as per Transfermarkt.co.uk). Having tasted Premier League and UEFA Champions League glory with the club, Wijnaldum’s contract at Anfield is due to expire in June 2021 and he is yet to sign an extension, subsequently leaving much uncertainty around his future.

2018/19 season quiz: How many points did Jurgen Klopp's side accumulate in the Premier League?

When the subject of the Dutchman came up, here is what Khan had to say on the current situation:

“I think we’ve tried everything to make him sign a new contract and I think he’s entitled to do what he wants for his final contract, for his final payday. He’s been an [absolutely] brilliant servant for us. I genuinely don’t think he’s going to go [before his contract ends]. There has definitely not been [an] enquiry from Barcelona officially or anything. This is very much like the Emre Can situation.”

TIF Thoughts…

The podcaster’s comments would suggest that he believes the player is more likely to leave at the end of his current contract rather than a move away materialising before next June. However, judging by his tone, we can assume he isn’t confident Wijnaldum is going to commit his longer-term future to the Merseyside giants.

The Dutch international, according to Transfermarkt.co.uk, currently holds a transfer value of £36m and therefore in our view, if he isn’t willing to commit, perhaps it would be wise for the Anfield club to consider selling him prior to the end of his contract, allowing them to bring in as much money as they can for the 29-year-old as opposed to losing him on a free transfer next summer.
