The Evening Standard’s Liverpool journalist David Lynch has made a claim on Reds winger Xherdan Shaqiri and his future at Anfield.

This comes after Lynch recently made a guest appearance on The LFC Transfer Room Podcast where he spoke about a range of topics related to the Merseyside club.

2018/19 season quiz: How many points did Jurgen Klopp's side accumulate in the Premier League?

On the subject of Shaqiri and the possibility of him leaving the club this summer, Lynch shared his thoughts on the matter.

He said: “Everyone I speak to at Liverpool, the suggestion is he’s definitely going to leave, so they’re obviously confident that they can get a decent fee for him. Despite the fact that he’s had an injury-plagued season, he’s been very unfortunate this year. I think he would have played a bigger role, obviously if he’d been fit.

“The only thing that’s going to stop him leaving is if a team doesn’t come up with an acceptable bid. Liverpool’s expectations around what they could get for him were fairly high in January, which is before we realised how big an impact [the pandemic] was going to have, so it’s whether clubs can match that. That said, I think Liverpool seem like they’re confident they’ll get it. They got £12 million for [Dejan] Lovren in this market.

“I think Shaqiri is a really desirable player, so I think he will move on, but he’ll move on as a well-liked player. It’s a shame it hadn’t quite worked out because of the injuries.”

The winger signed to the Merseyside club back in the 2018 summer transfer window from Stoke City in a deal worth £13.23 million.

Since then, the 28-year-old has only gone on to make 41 appearances in a Liverpool shirt across all competitions, scoring seven goals and proving five assists along the way.

Unfortunately for Shaqiri, who is currently valued at £14.4 million, as Lynch mentioned in the podcast, numerous injuries have disrupted his time at Anfield since he arrived.

TIF Thoughts…

It’s a shame that Shaqiri could be on his way out of Liverpool this summer when he has only made 41 appearances for the club in two years. However, during his time as a Liverpool player, Shaqiri has won the Premier League, Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup (per Transfermarkt).

It will be interesting to see if any club decides to put a bid in for Shaqiri this summer to take him away from the Reds.
