The Athletic’s Greg O’Keeffe has suggested that Everton may sell Icelandic midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson in the summer transfer window.

Sigurdsson has been situated at Goodison Park since the summer of 2017, having signed for the Merseyside club from Swansea City for a fee of £45m (per BBC).

Over the 2019/20 season, though, the 30-year-old midfielder bagged just two goals and three assists in 35 Premier League appearances to earn an uninspiring 6.65/10 average rating (per WhoScored).

So, in the latest episode of the All Together Now Podcast, O’Keeffe discussed possible Everton departures this summer and named Sigurdsson.

To kick-off this quiz on Carlo Ancelotti on the side of easy, which side was his first game on the touchline at Goodison Park against?

He said: “I don’t think any of those big kind of premium names will go.

“If you’re talking about big names on big wages, like Gylfi Sigurdsson, then there might be an honest conversation with the board and [Carlo] Ancelotti when they sit down this week and say, ‘Well, do we move on someone like him?’

“I know Ancelotti has spoken of seeing his positive attributes and trying to find a way to get the best from him and maybe [he] did that a little bit towards the last couple of games, [against] Sheffield United perhaps, but they always talk about reducing that wage bill and he’s a very, very big earner.

“So, I suppose we will see in the coming weeks.”

TIF Thoughts…

As can be seen in what O’Keeffe had to say, seemingly he believes that there may be a conversation between Ancelotti and the board where they decide that Sigurdsson is not justifying his wages.

Should Everton sell Gylfi Sigurdsson this summer?

According to Spotrac, the Icelandic midfielder is the joint-fourth-highest earner at the club on £100,000 per week, so, it would perhaps not be a surprise if it was decided that Sigurdsson does not justify his wages.

That being because he was only the joint-ninth-best performing player for Everton over the 2019/20 Premier League season, which is disproportionate to earning the joint-fourth-most.
