Journalist and Aston Villa fan James Hendicott has been questioning the club’s assistant head coach John Terry with regards to Villa’s poor defensive record in the 2019/20 Premier League season.

This comes after Hendicott recently made a guest appearance on the latest episode of For The Love of Paul McGrath, a Villa-themed podcast, to share his thoughts on Villa’s season in the top-flight.

In this 2019/20 season quiz, do you remember who scored Villa's first PL goal of the season?

On the topic of Villa’s defence, Hendicott raised the issue of Terry and what his impact on the team has been throughout the season.

He said: “I think a lot of Villa fans have been asking themselves, what’s the deal with John Terry? I mean, you’ve got a fantastically good centre-back there, a legendary centre-back. I’m sure some of us have our issues with him, but we won’t go down that road – but how can he not sort out a back four which, on paper is fairly decent, into something more cohesive than what it was for the first 30 games of the season? It’s a fair question, I think.”

The former Chelsea defender first joined Villa back in 2017 for the final season of his playing career.

In October 2018, Terry was appointed as Villa’s assistant head coach under Dean Smith, who was also named as Villa’s new manager at the time (per BBC Sport). Since then, Smith and Terry have guided Villa out of the Championship and have now managed to help them avoid relegation during the 2019/20 Premier League season.

TIF Thoughts…

With Villa conceding a total of 67 goals in the Premier League last season, it’s understandable why Hendicott has raised the issue about the Villans’ defensive record during the podcast.

If Villa are to avoid another relegation battle next season, they will definitely need to improve their defence if they want to progress forward.
