Aston Villa podcaster Neil Dunworth has been sharing his thoughts on Villa goalkeeper Lovre Kalinic and his time at the Birmingham club.

This comes after Dunworth recently made an appearance on Villa-themed podcast, Holtecast, where he spoke about a number of topics related to Dean Smith’s side.

In this 2019/20 season quiz, do you remember who scored Villa's first PL goal of the season?

On the subject of Villa’s current crop of goalkeepers, Dunworth shared his thoughts on Kalinic, in particular.

He said: “It’s really strange though because Lovre Kalinic is the one for me, is the enigma for me, I always thought that was a no-brainer like looking at him playing for Croatia I just thought that was the no-brainer kind of signing, that he would be really good but just hasn’t been you know, and it’s kind of a head-scratcher for me.”

Villa signed the shot-stopper back in the 2019 January transfer window from Belgian side KAA Gent for a fee of £5.4 million.

In the 2020 January transfer window, Kalinic joined French side, Toulouse, on a short term loan deal before he returned to Villa at the end of June.

Overall, Kalinic, who is currently valued at £2.52 million, has made just eight senior appearances for Villa in which he has conceded 15 goals and kept just one clean sheet along the way (per Transfermarkt).

TIF Thoughts…

With Kalinic only making eight appearances for Villa since he arrived at the club, it’s no wonder Dunworth is so baffled by what has happened to the goalkeeper.

As well as Kalinic, Villa currently have Tom Heaton, Jed Steer and Orjan Nyland in their squad who will all be fighting to be the club’s number one goalkeeper.

If Kalinic feels he won’t get regular game time at Villa next season, maybe the best move for him would be to find another club this summer where he would be playing week in and week out.
