Aston Villa fan and journalist Neil Dunsworth has suggested that a potential summer transfer move for Mario Gotze would be ‘fantastic’ for the club.

This comes as Dunsworth recently made a guest appearance on Villa-themed podcast Holtecast, where he spoke about a range of transfer-related topics concerning Dean Smith’s side.

In this 2019/20 season quiz, do you remember who scored Villa's first PL goal of the season?

Whilst talking about which players he would like to see Villa sign this summer, Dunsworth picked Gotze as one of his choices for Villa to make a move for.

He said: “While the name might sound ‘out there’ and it might sound unattainable, Mario Gotze is unattached to anybody at the moment, wants to stay in Europe [and] hasn’t played in England.

“I think that could be your marquee signing that could pan out for Aston Villa. It would once again, mean pushing Jack out to the left-wing and letting him play at the top of that diamond or play as that player behind a central striker, but the name power in Mario Gotze would be fantastic.

“I think it’s a fantasy signing – whether he’d want to come and spend his days in Birmingham, I don’t know, but he is attainable, I think.”

The 28-year-old, who is valued at £9.45 million, is currently without a club after he left Borussia Dortmund last month.

In 219 appearances across two spells for the Dortmund senior side, Gotze managed to score 45 goals and provide 61 assists.

In 2013, Gotze made the move to Bayern Munich, in which he scored 36 goals and provided 24 assists in 114 appearances before returning to Dortmund in 2016.

TIF Thoughts…

With Gotze having made so many appearances for Dortmund and Bayern in the Bundesliga and Champions League, as well as winning the World Cup for Germany back in 2014 (of course, thanks to his winning goal), the midfielder certainly has a lot of experience playing at the highest level for club and country under his belt.

It would be interesting to see if Villa try and make a deal with Gotze to bring him to England and see if he can perform in the Premier League for Smith’s side.
