Aston Villa journalist Gregg Evans has been talking about the recent appointment of Johan Lange as Villa’s new sporting director.

This comes after Evans recently made an appearance on The Athletic’s Villa-themed podcast 1874 where he spoke about a range of topics concerning the club.

In this 2019/20 season quiz, do you remember who scored Villa's first PL goal of the season?

On the subject of Lange and his recent appointment at Villa, Evans shared his thoughts on the move.

He said: “Really interesting appointment.

“How it’ll work is [Dean] Smith and Lange will decide on the [transfer] targets and then when it comes to the real nuts and bolts of the deal, putting it all together and sorting out the financials, [Christian] Purslow will come in and hopefully get the job done.”

It was revealed last month that Lange would be joining the club as their new sporting director after Jesus Garcia Pitarch left the position shortly before Lange was appointed.

The official Villa club website claims that in his new position, Lane will “report directly” to the board at the Birmingham club.

The 2019/20 season saw Dean Smith’s side finish in 17th place in the Premier League table with 35 points, narrowly avoiding the drop to the Championship.

TIF Thoughts…

The fact that Villa have brought Lange in to help Smith out with making transfers this summer shows that the club are potentially looking to bring in some new faces to the squad in the coming weeks.

Whatever the club decides to do this summer in terms of incoming or outgoing transfers, everyone at Villa will be hoping they can improve their season next year so they aren’t involved in another relegation battle by the end of the 2020/21 campaign.
