Aston Villa journalist Dan Bardell has claimed that signing a new goalkeeper this summer should be ‘high on the priority list’ for the club this summer.
This comes after Bardell recently made an appearance on The Villa View, a Villa-themed podcast where he spoke about a range of topics related to Dean Smith’s side.
On the subject of potential incoming transfers at Villa this summer, Bardell had this to say on the club’s search for a new shot-stopper.
He said: “I understand we are in for a goalkeeper, we want a goalkeeper. I think he’s possibly been identified, but they’ve not managed to make a move yet – but they need a goalkeeper. I think that’s something that’s high on the priority list.”
Villa currently have Tom Heaton, Lovre Kalinic, Jed Steer and Orjan Nyland in their squad that can play between the sticks.
Back in January, Heaton suffered a serious knee injury that kept him out of action for the rest of the 2019/20 Premier League season after previously making 20 league appearances for Villa. As a result of this injury to the Englishman, Villa signed Pepe Reina on a loan deal from AC Milan until the end of the campaign to make up for Heaton’s prolonged absence.

With Villa currently having four goalkeepers in their squad at the moment, it would seem strange that the club would be targeting another ‘keeper to bring in unless they have plans in place that would see one or more of their current shot-stoppers leave Villa Park this summer.
With Villa conceding 67 goals throughout their 2019/20 Premier League campaign and only managing to keep seven clean sheets, they would perhaps be hoping that a potential new goalkeeper would be able to fix this issue heading into next season.
