Charles Watts, the Arsenal correspondent for Goal, talked about the future of David Luiz during a recent video on his YouTube channel.
According to a recent report from RMC Sport (via One Football), the French club Rennes recently expressed an interest in the Brazilian defender, who is said to be one of a number of senior players the North London club have put up for sale this summer.
Here is what Watts had to say on whether the centre-back could be set to move away from North London in the current transfer window:
“I don’t think Luiz is going to go, certainly not. I think he’s going to be key.”
TIF Thoughts…
Luiz swapped Stamford Bridge for the Emirates Stadium in August 2019 in a deal reportedly worth £7.83m (as per Transfermarkt). In June, it was announced that the 33-year-old had agreed to a contract extension with the club that would see him remain an Arsenal player for another year (via Arsenal.com)
Would you like to see David Luiz play a key role next season?
Yes
No
Taking into account the fact he was recently handed a new deal, we can assume that at least for the time being, the player remains a part of Mikel Arteta’s plans and Watts went one further by sharing that in his view, the player will be ‘key’ for the Gunners in the 2020/21 campaign.
Luiz’s average performance rating in the Premier League last season was an underwhelming 6.58/10 (via WhoScored) and therefore, perhaps it is his experience that the Spaniard values most. The former Paris Saint-Germain defender has won league titles in a number of countries and he has lifted multiple trophies across Europe (via Transfermarkt). So, in our view, his know-how could prove invaluable during the team’s rebuild and we expect him to stay.
