Speaking recently on a Q&A on the LeedsLive website, Leeds United correspondent Beren Cross provided an update on Marcelo Bielsa’s contract situation with the club.

Since taking over at Leeds back in 2018, it is hardly an understatement to say that Bielsa has played a massive part in the turning of the club’s fortunes.

Starting with an easy one how many points did Leeds end the season with?

Inheriting a side that had finished 13th in the 2017/18 Championship season, the 65-year-old guided the team to a third-place finish in his first season in charge and although the club lost to Derby County in the play-off semi-final that year, it was a significant improvement on the season before.

In 2019/20, Bielsa and his Leeds side took the league by storm, eventually finishing 10 points above second-placed West Bromwich Albion, ensuring that the Whites would be playing in the top flight of English football for the first time in 16 years in the 2020/21 campaign.

However, the Argentine’s contract has technically run out this summer, and although the club are said to be confident of tying their manager down to a new deal, there has still been no confirmation that a contract has been agreed.

On a recent Q&A on LeedsLive, Beren Cross provided an update on Bielsa’s contract talks with the club, stating:

“Talks are ongoing. It’s a good point, though. Any incoming players will want assurances on what Bielsa is doing. There is no sense of panic about what is going on with Bielsa in these talks. It’s a calm and methodical process which everyone has faith in. The season starts in 39 days, so they can’t wait a lot longer before he signs.”

TIF Thoughts…

As such, it would appear that, within the Leeds camp, there is no great sense of panic regarding the future of Bielsa.

Do you think that Marcelo Bielsa will be at Leeds United for the long-term?

Having said that, Cross has also stated that the club ‘can’t wait a lot longer’ due to the upcoming start of the season, and it is our opinion that the sooner the club can tie Bielsa down, the better.
