Former centre forward Chris Sutton appeared on a recent edition of the BBC’s Football Daily podcast to preview the 2020/21 Scottish Premiership season and the 47-year-old spent some time discussing Rangers forward Alfredo Morelos during the show.

Morelos has been linked with a move away from Ibrox recently, with The Athletic’s Rangers correspondent Jordan Campbell reporting that the Colombia international ‘has his heart set on a move to French side Lille,’ indicating that the 24-year-old may not see himself remaining at Ibrox for the long-term.

Sutton shared his thoughts on the Rangers attacker’s current situation during this recent edition of the BBC’s Football Daily podcast, saying: “He’s scored, I think, 59 goals in the last two seasons – that is unbelievable. That is an unbelievable return – but he’s a problem. He’s a problem and we’ve seen over the last couple of seasons, he has his moments.

“I mentioned the word ‘trust’ – you can’t trust him. He came back out of shape and he went back to Colombia and didn’t come back – missed a huge cup game [against Hearts, which Rangers lost 1-0 back in February].

“How can Steven Gerrard hang his hat on a player [like Morelos]? I believe and I’m told that he wants away.”

TIF Thoughts…

Rangers boss Gerrard has described his relationship with Morelos as being a challenging one in the past, stating that the 24-year-old “tests [him] the most” of any of his players at Ibrox. Additionally, Morelos’ disciplinary record has also been criticised during his time at the Glasgow-based club.

With that in mind, it may be understandable why Sutton believes that the Gers “can’t trust” the Colombian, however, Morelos has been prolific in front of goal throughout his time at Ibrox, making 106 goal contributions in all competitions in his 137 appearances for the club thus far. With that in mind, it may be fair to say that Rangers do rely on the striker in front of goal and that may be difficult to replace if he does depart from the club this summer.
