Celtic are reportedly keeping an eye on David Marshall and he could be an alternative if a deal for Fraser Forster fails this summer.

The Glasgow Times recently published an article about Forster, carrying Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl’s comments about the goalkeeper. The piece goes on to mention the fact that the Hoops have already identified a couple of other targets if the deal for the English goalkeeper doesn’t work out.

One of those targets is Marshall, while the other target is former Burnley and Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart.

Would Marshall be a good Forster alternative?

No, we shouldn't sign him

No, we shouldn't sign him

This isn’t the first time that Marshall is being linked with a move to Parkhead, as The Herald had reported that the Wigan Athletic goalkeeper figures prominently on Celtic’s list of potential targets even though no formal contact has been made.

Scotland international Marshall is a former Hoops player and had come through the ranks at Parkhead, but he had left Celtic to join Norwich City in the summer of 2007. Before Wigan, he also played for Cardiff City and Hull City (via Transfermarkt).

Starting with an easy one- apart from Paris Saint-Germain, which other French club did Edouard play for?

TIF Thoughts…

Marshall, who is valued at £360k (as per Transfermarkt), has played quite a few games for Wigan in the 2019/20 season. He has made 38 appearances in all competitions, with 37 of them coming in the Championship. The 35-year-old has kept 15 clean sheets in all competitions as well (via Transfermarkt).

This shows that Marshall can be a reliable option between the sticks and since he’s played for Celtic before, he knows the club well. As he came through the ranks at Parkhead, he could indeed have a special connection with the club too. So if the Forster deal doesn’t go through, Marshall could prove to be a good move for the Bhoys.
