The Athletic journalist Tim Spiers has called for Wolverhampton Wanderers to retain the services of Portuguese attacker Diogo Jota.

This season, the 23-year-old forward has been in decent form as he has secured a 6.76/10 average rating in the Premier League with seven goals and one assist in 34 appearances (per WhoScored).

Jota’s rating this season does, however, fall short of the 6.89/10 average rating that he secured in the Premier League last season with nine goals and five assists.

In the latest episode of The Athletic’s The Molineux View podcast, though, Spiers aired that the Old Gold should retain the services of the attacker at all costs.

To kick-off this quiz on Nuno Espirito Santo on the hard side, which club was his first game on the touchline at Molineux against?

He said: “My goodness, if anyone’s thinking of selling him, including you, Wolves, if you’re listening, do not sell him because he is my favourite player, on his day. We just need to see that day more often.

“This guy’s 23, he’s going to be an absolute superstar. He’s got everything. I think he’s a phenomenal talent. He just needs to show a bit more consistency, that’s all, but he’s still growing.

“He’s phenomenal. Honestly, on his day, he’s better than [Adama] Traore for me, absolutely. He’s got far more about him, far more end product, far more of a well-rounded game.

“Maybe not far more, but in my opinion, he should go absolutely nowhere and he should be at the forefront of what Wolves are doing going forward.”

TIF Thoughts…

As can be seen in Spiers’ high praise, the journalist clearly still highly rates the forward despite him bagging six fewer goal involvements in the league this season compared to last.

If the Portuguese attacker was to leave Molineux this summer, though, due to his age, the fact he is contracted with the Old Gold for another two years and has a market value of £25.2m according to Transfermarkt, it seems likely that he would command a hefty fee.
