Sky Sports reporter Jamie Weir, DJ Amy Lauren and Jack Abbott joined Ricky Sacks on the latest edition of the Last Word On Spurs podcast and during the show, Weir spent some time discussing Tottenham Hotspur’s defence and recent reports linking Spurs centre-back Jan Vertonghen with a move to Manchester City

Reports have recently emerged linking Vertonghen with a move to Pep Guardiola’s side, as the Belgium international is set to become a free agent at the end of July. A recent report from The Telegraph has claimed that City see Vertonghen as ‘a short-term solution in Guardiola’s defence.’

Weir spent some time discussing Tottenham’s defence during the latest edition of the Last Word On Spurs podcast. Spurs have kept seven clean sheets in the Premier League this season, which is more clean sheets than just three other teams in England’s top-flight have kept this season at present.

However, three of Spurs’ seven clean sheets have come in their last six games, which indicates that their defence has been more solid in recent weeks.

Weir, who is a Tottenham fan in addition to being a Sky Sports reporter, shared a positive view on Spurs’ defence during this podcast appearance, saying: “It’s not as if the defending has been that bad since we’ve come back, and things do take time. Jose Mourinho clearly wants to start with a strong defensive base and I think we’re slowly getting there.

“I think we’ll see into next season, Eric Dier will become his number-one choice centre-half, I think, probably alongside Davinson Sanchez, although I’d love to still think that Toby [Alderweireld] has a part to play, because I think he’s such a calming influence in that back four. Whether Jan Vertonghen’s still at the club, I don’t know, there’s talk that he might move to Manchester City, which would be extraordinary.

“I saw a tweet earlier this week, I think it was from Charlie Parrish, saying: ‘I’m making peace with the fact that Jan Vertonghen might go to Manchester City in that he’ll learn all the tricks off Pep Guardiola, then come back and manage Spurs five years down the line and turn us into champions,’ so maybe that’s how we make our peace with Jan Vertonghen going to City.”

TIF Thoughts…

The majority of Weir’s comments on Spurs’ defence were quite positive and that may be understandable considering that the Lilywhites have kept three clean sheets in their last six Premier League games

However, the fact that he explained that he related to a tweet that was posted by Charlie Parrish earlier this week that talked about having to make peace with the idea of Vertonghen going to City indicates that he isn’t delighted by the idea of the Belgian leaving Spurs to join a Premier League rival.
