On the latest episode of the TIFO Football Podcast for The Athletic, Seb Stafford-Bloor, Joe Devine and Alex Stewart have been talking about some of the latest goings-on in the Premier League, including a discussion of Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane.

The England captain scored twice in the win against Newcastle United on Wednesday night, but there is still concern amongst those on the podcast that after his injury concerns in recent seasons, the 26-year-old may not get back to his best. The striker was ruled out in January with a hamstring tear but has featured in every single game for Jose Mourinho’s side since the restart.

How well can you remember Spurs' season so far? - Who did Spurs beat in the opening fixture?

Here’s what Stafford-Bloor had to say about the academy graduate:

“There are question marks about Harry Kane, the commentary around football tends to be a little bit binary, so a player is either the very best of the world or absolutely finished. I don’t think Kane is at either of those extremities, but there is very clearly an issue with the wear and tear that he’s suffered throughout his career and the succession of injuries.

“From Harry Kane’s standpoint, he’s in a very difficult situation because he’s got four years left on his contract, and no matter how disenchanted he may become with this rebuild or with an inability to win silverware at Tottenham, that decision won’t be up to him.”

TIF Thoughts…

Kane has hit four goals for Spurs since the restart, despite the Lilywhites’ indifferent form, so it is perhaps slightly premature to write him off. Although this season has been one of his worst in terms of goalscoring in the Premier League, he did spend a significant period out injured, and it would be no surprise to see him back challenging for the golden boot next season should he stay fit.

In terms of wanting to stay with the club, you could understand why a player such as Kane might want to leave Spurs this summer, especially as they currently look unlikely to qualify for the Champions League. However, with the striker currently valued at £108 million by Transfermarkt, it is perhaps difficult to see any club paying the necessary fee to sign him this summer, especially with the financial impact of the current viral outbreak on football.
