Chelsea winger Willian is set to become a free agent this summer and during the most recent edition of The Transfer Window podcast, Duncan Castles discussed Tottenham Hotspur manager Jose Mourinho’s interest in the player and the possibility that he will join Spurs this summer.

The current viral outbreak has had a significant impact on Tottenham Hotspur’s finances. The club recently had to take out a £175m Bank of England loan ‘to help them through the next year or so,’ as per The Guardian.

As a result of the impact that the current viral outbreak has had on Tottenham’s finances, it has been reported that Spurs boss Mourinho ‘will have to sell before he can buy’ in the transfer market this summer and the north London club are also expected to have to ‘rely on free transfers, loans and swap deals’ in the 2020 summer transfer window.

Castles discussed Willian’s current situation and the possibility that the Brazilian will move to Spurs this summer during this recent edition of The Transfer Window podcast, saying: “Jose Mourinho was interested in taking him to Tottenham before [the pandemic] hit Tottenham’s finances so heavily and I think that’s become a more difficult deal for Tottenham to complete because of age and because of the cost of the contract over that period of time.”

It’s clear that Spurs’ finances are not in the best of health at present and Castles seems to believe that this will make it difficult for Mourinho to bring the 31-year-old winger to the north London club, despite the fact that he is set to become a free agent this summer.

Considering that it has been reported that Tottenham will have to sell in order to buy this summer, perhaps the Lilywhites will also have to get players off the wage bill in order to make room for others, such as Willian, to join the club.
