Liam Kennedy has been speaking on a recent episode of NUFC Matters with Steve Wraith and went into great detail on the proposed takeover of Newcastle United.

Starting with an easy one, against which club did Shelvey make his Newcastle debut?

Kennedy spent a long time on the proposed takeover led by Amanda Staveley’s Saudi-backed consortium and considered the Reuben brothers’ role in the bid.

The Shields Gazette reporter was asked if he could see the Reuben brothers coming in with their own takeover offer if the Premier League rejects the deal for Staveley’s bid.

In the current structure, the Reuben brothers are going to own 10% of the Toon, but Kennedy does not believe that they would make their own bid.

He said: “I just don’t believe that’s something they would want to do, and that’s okay.

“These people have made a lot of money doing what they do, and they might not want to spend it on a football club, they might want to have a vested interest in a city where they are expanding their own empire.”

However, he then pointed out that with the Reubens’ considerable wealth, if they chose to buy the Toon without the support of PIF, the Toon would still be a wealthy club.

“We’ve all seen the rich lists; I think if they did buy Newcastle United with Amanda [Staveley], they’d probably be the second-richest owners in the Premier League outright.”

So, Kennedy does not believe that the Reuben brothers would want to launch their own takeover bid of the Toon if the PL rejects this deal, but they certainly have the wealth to do that.

Do you think the Reuben brothers should step in?

TIF Thoughts…

Kennedy makes some good points, and ultimately it is up to the Reuben brothers to make their decision on if they would pursue a move to buy the Toon.

However, the Staveley bid has not been rejected yet despite a report claiming that the Premier League were unlikely to pass the takeover.

It will be interesting to see how this situation develops.
