Liam Kennedy of the Shields Gazette has been discussing the possibility of Jetro Willems returning to Newcastle United during a recent edition of NUFC Matters with Steve Wraith.

The Magpies signed the Dutchman from Eintracht Frankfurt last summer on loan but unfortunately his time at St. James’ Park was cut short when he ruptured his ACL in the club’s victory over Chelsea back in January.

Starting with an easy one, against which club did Shelvey make his Newcastle debut?

When asked about the possibility of the 26-year-old returning to the club, Kennedy said:

“Lockdown has probably been a good thing for him, because it’s allowed him to get fitter and fitter and we’re now talking about the season starting late. He’s a player that really impressed a lot of people at the football club – not only with his performances, but his attitude. I think that could be a deal that resurfaces at some point. Who knows, could this summer be too soon? It might be, but I suspect we might well see him in a Newcastle shirt again.”

TIF Thoughts…

Willems made 20 appearances for Steve Bruce’s side prior to picking up the aforementioned injury, during which he scored twice and provided his teammates with three assists (as per Transfermarkt.co.uk).

According to WhoScored.com, his average performance rating in the Premier League last season was 6.84/10, making him the club’s fourth most consistent performer despite missing so much of the campaign.

The former PSV Eindhoven player’s contract with his Bundesliga employers is due to expire at the end of next season and his current market value stands at £4.95m. Kennedy hasn’t ruled out the possibility of him returning, in fact, you could argue that he appears quietly confident of a deal taking place if Newcastle United are interested in making it happen.
