Lee Clark has been on a recent episode of NUFC Matters with Steve Wraith and discussed various topics related to Newcastle United.

Starting with an easy one, against which club did Shelvey make his Newcastle debut?

One of the topics that the former Toon man discussed was the future of Allan Saint-Maximin and how the lack of a takeover could impact his future.

Here is what Clark said when discussing the future of the 23-year-old:

“When you’ve been the star player like Saint-Maximin has on a regular basis, [he’s] the one player who gets you on the end of your seat, even when you’re watching it on the telly.

“He’ll be thinking ‘well, I am good enough to play in a lot of the other teams in the Premier League higher up from Newcastle and if we’re not going to invest in the team, maybe I need to look elsewhere.’”

So, it seems like Clark believes that Saint-Maximin could look to leave the Toon if the squad is not substantially invested in, and given Steve Bruce reportedly only has a transfer budget of £35m plus player sales, that might not happen in this transfer window.

Do you agree with Clark?

Yes, we might struggle to keep ASM if the investment doesn't come

TIF Thoughts…

Newcastle are in the middle of a proposed takeover by Amanda Staveley’s Saudi-backed consortium; however, with the Premier League still looking over the deal, the Toon have to make plans for next season.

Bruce has claimed that he has one or two things in the pipeline, and now that the transfer window is open, it will be interesting to see what business the Toon do.

However, Saint-Maximin was superb for the Toon in the 2019/20 season, earning an average rating of 7.29/10, but if the players brought in don’t match his level, then he might consider leaving, according to Clark.

It will be intriguing to see what happens with Saint-Maximin and the takeover.
