John Gibson has been on a recent episode of the NUFC Matters with Steve Wraith and discussed the proposed takeover of Newcastle United, in which he claimed that Mike Ashley and the Toon faithful bizarrely find themselves on the same side as the wait for a decision goes on.

Starting with an easy one, against which club did Shelvey make his Newcastle debut?

The journalist talked about a lot of Toon-related topics, but most of his time was spent on the proposed takeover by Amanda Staveley’s Saudi-backed consortium.

Within this conversation, Gibson talked about the transfer market and how the Toon would be struggling because of the Premier League’s refusal to make a decision, before suggesting that current owner Mike Ashley and the fans want the same thing.

He said: “Ashley has put us on the back foot in the past in the transfer market because he’s been very, very reluctant [to spend money].

“We are now being put on the back foot by the Premier League; it’s amazing that Ashley is in the same bed as the fans, considering they dislike each other so much because Ashley is now in our camp.

“[He’s] desperate for the deal to go through, so he gets £300m; we are desperate for it to go through so we get rid of him.”

So, according to Gibson, Ashley and Newcastle both want the Premier League to accept this takeover though it is for totally different reasons.

Do you think Ashley and the fans want the same thing?

TIF Thoughts…

The deal for Staveley’s consortium was agreed with Ashley in April, and a deposit was paid to him; however, since then, he has had to wait for the Premier League to decide if he gets the rest of the money that he has agreed to sell the Toon for.

So, Gibson is surely right to suggest that both Newcastle fans and Ashley want this takeover to go through, and all parties involved may well be hoping that the PL is finally ready to accept the takeover bid as August approaches.
