George Caulkin, speaking on the latest episode of The Pod On The Tyne, has revealed what stage the proposed takeover of Newcastle United is at.

Nice easy one to start off with, which club did Newcastle United sign Shearer from in 1996?

The Athletic reporter discussed many things, like the Toon’s 4-1 win over Bournemouth.

Still, he spent a little bit of time on the takeover, and he revealed that statements by Saudi Arabia released last week have not helped.

Here is what he had to say about those statements and where he believes this takeover to be.

“So, the last time we talked about it [the takeover] there’d been briefings by beIN Sports, their intelligence was that a decision was very close and the buyers’ side [Amanda Staveley’s Saudi-backed consortium] were saying similar things.

“There were then various Saudi statements, which by all accounts haven’t helped matters.”

It, therefore, seems that this statement released by Saudi Arabia has not helped the takeover and actually might have delayed the Premier League’s decision (via the Daily Mail).

Do you think the statement from Saudi Arabia helped?

TIF Thoughts…

Some reports had suggested that the Premier League were going to decide last week and that they were going to rule in favour of the takeover after Saudi Arabia had announced an intention to crack down on piracy.

However, a statement claiming that it would have been easy for any organisation to stop piracy in Saudi Arabia did not go down well.

This is because the Premier League have tried several times to take legal action only for no law firm to take on the case in Saudi Arabia.

Therefore, it seems as if this was an unwise statement by Saudi Arabia, and it could have dragged out a process that has been ongoing since April.
