Newcastle United supporter Steve Wraith caught the attention of some Toon fans recently when he posted a tweet after the news broke confirming that the Saudi-backed Toon takeover is off.

Wraith posted a tweet sharing some footage of a Sky Sports News reporter reading out a statement from the Saudi-backed consortium that had been behind a Toon takeover bid and has now pulled out of its bid to buy the club.

As per Sky Sports, this consortium released a statement announcing that they would be ending their interest in purchasing Newcastle United. The consortium explained their decision in this statement, saying that: “The prolonged process under the current circumstances coupled with global uncertainty has rendered the potential investment no longer commercially viable.”

This consortium’s takeover bid was going through the Premier League’s checks since April and according to The Guardian, these checks normally take just weeks to reach completion, however, months later this group was still waiting for the Premier League’s approval and judging by their statement, it appears that this “prolonged process,” as well as the impact of the current viral outbreak on Saudi Arabia’s finances, has resulted in the group pulling out of this takeover.

After Wraith shared footage of this statement being read out in full on Sky Sports News, plenty of Toon fans responded to his tweet to react to the news.

It may be understandable if Newcastle United supporters had high hopes for the club under the ownership of these buyers, considering that it had been reported that the group behind this takeover would be the wealthiest club owners in the Premier League if the deal was approved and now that the deal is off, it mightn’t be too surprising to see that plenty of Newcastle fans are disappointed.
