Luke Edwards has been on the latest episode of True Faith’s NUFC Podcast and has been talking about the proposed takeover of Newcastle United.

Starting with an easy one, against which club did Shelvey make his Newcastle debut?

Edwards discussed other things relating to Newcastle but spent a little bit of time on the takeover.

One of the elements of the takeover that he discussed was the noise from the buyers and how that might have negatively impacted the chances of their takeover going through.

He said: “Amanda Staveley’s takeovers, both of them, have made a hell of a lot of noise, and the irony of that this time is if it had been done quieter and done the way Man City was, the Qataris wouldn’t have been able to mobilise, wouldn’t have been able to get their legal arguments – not the PR arguments – the legal arguments in a row, wouldn’t have the human rights stuff.

“It would’ve just been quiet, there would have been a little brief outcry, the Premier League could have passed it all, but because so much noise was made about it from January onwards, it gave everybody advanced warning and the Premier League were braced for it, BeIN, the Qataris were braced for it, and it’s caused them problems.”

It seems as if Edwards believes that if the buyers had been quieter, then the deal might have been concluded by now.

Do you think that amount of noise made has had an impact?

Yes, they should have just done it secretly

No, the deal would have leaked somehow

TIF Thoughts…

Reports of this takeover first emerged in January, and then by April, a deal with Mike Ashley had been agreed, and the process was expected to take three to four weeks from there.

However, complaints emerged from the likes of BeIN Sports, Hatice Cengiz and Amnesty International, and we are now nearly in August, with the latest on the takeover being that it has stalled.

This is still not a decision from the Premier League, and with the new season starting on 12th September, the Toon are in limbo.

Whether or not Edwards’ claims hold any truth, what is clear is that this deal is now stuck with no clear resolution in sight.
