Manchester Evening News reporter Samuel Luckhurst joined Dominic Booth on a recent edition of the Manchester Is Red podcast where they spent some time discussing United’s pursuit of Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho.

Booth raised the topic of United’s pursuit of Sancho when he mentioned that some recent reports have claimed that the Red Devils are not prepared to spend more than £50m to sign the England international

To kick off this 1990s Premier League quiz, which season was the Premier League's inaugural campaign?

After Luckhurst stated that he believes the reports claiming that United aren’t prepared to spend over £50m on Sancho are ‘ridiculous’, he then shared his thoughts on the current status of United’s pursuit of the Dortmund man.

The journalist said: “There is going to have to be a compromise with Sancho and I can see them paying a large enough fee that doesn’t necessarily break the nine-figure mark, but with add-ons, does take it over £100m.

“Sometimes the exchange rate comes into play and it’s quite important in that what might be €100 million to Dortmund is £90-odd million for United, at which point each side can spin it the way they like.”

Luckhurst then went on to discuss the importance of securing Champions League football for next season in relation to United’s pursuit of Sancho, saying: “They lost £28m in the period from their last financial accounts due to the pandemic. Gate receipts – they’ll lose more money on that, the Adidas contract takes a hit as well, there’s no way they can afford someone like Sancho, I just do not see it if they don’t get in the Champions League.

“But, they should be very optimistic of returning to the Champions League next year and I do think – despite the losses and despite the hit of the pandemic – there’s enough wiggle room there to do a Sancho deal, but it might be that they have to just kind of accept that – ‘okay, if we get him in, we can’t get anyone else in.’”

TIF Thoughts…

The current viral outbreak is set to have a major impact on football’s transfer market and with that in mind, it may be understandable why clubs might struggle to sign a player like Sancho, who is currently valued at £105.3m according to Transfermarkt, this summer.

However, if the 20-year-old England international is the Red Devils’ primary transfer target this summer, then Luckhurst’s update revealing that there might be “enough wiggle room there to do a Sancho deal” could be a positive update for this potential move.
