According to recent reports, Manchester City will be in the market for a new striker this summer, despite the fact the club are considering offering Sergio Aguero a new deal.

The reports in The Mirror claim that Aguero has been planning a move back to Independiente upon the expiry of his current contract, which runs until summer 2021.

In preparation for the 32-year-old’s departure, City are said to be in the market for a new centre-forward this summer, with Pep Guardiola still yet to be convinced that Gabriel Jesus can be the long-term replacement for Aguero.

However, it is also reported that, should the club’s record goalscorer impress next season, there remains the possibility that City could propose a one-year extension to the Argentina international’s current contract.

TIF Thoughts…

With Aguero currently out injured, Jesus has been leading the City line in the Argentinian’s absence, scoring two goals and providing two assists over his last five Premier League fixtures.

However, although these contributions have brought the forward to 12 goals and seven assists in the Premier League this term, the fact remains that, with Aguero out injured, Jesus is the only available option in Guardiola’s side who is an out-and-out striker.

As such, it would appear that, regardless of whether or not Aguero is indeed offered a new deal which would see him stay at the club until the summer of 2022, City are in need of more reinforcements in the position.

Whether or not that potential new signing would come in ahead of Jesus or would act as backup for the 23-year-old, remains to be seen, but it certainly appears as if City will be looking at bringing a new face to the club, in order to provide some cover and competition within the position, this summer.
