Liverpool journalist Matt Addison has been sharing his thoughts on Reds defender Neco Williams after his display during Liverpool’s 3-1 win over Brighton & Hove Albion in midweek.

2018/19 season quiz: How many points did Jurgen Klopp's side accumulate in the Premier League?

On the topic of Williams and how he fared in the match, Addison shared his thoughts on the defender.

He said: “I thought he did pretty well across that 45 minutes, particularly [in] the first 20 minutes or so, I thought he was really, really good and looked confident and was spraying balls about and doing everything that you would want him to do. I suppose, over the period, his confidence grew.

“The fact that Jurgen Klopp asked him to do that on his first Premier League start, to play on the wrong side, just shows really how highly rated he is. And I think from next season, Liverpool are going to see a lot more of him. I think he is essentially Liverpool’s transfer solution and I’d be surprised if that wasn’t the plan all along – for him to play left-back and right-back next season. I think he’s perfectly capable of doing that.”

Despite being a right-back, Williams started the match against Brighton in the left-back position. The Welshman was substituted at half time to be replaced by Andy Robertson after picking up a yellow card in the first half of the match.

For his performance in the match, the 19-year-old earned himself a match rating of 6.36/10 (per WhoScored).

TIF Thoughts…

Even though he wasn’t playing in his natural position, it’s great to see Williams getting some game time for the Reds.

The fact that Addison suggested that Williams will be playing a bigger part for Liverpool next season just goes to show that he has the versatility to play on both sides of the defence. It also shows that Klopp has the confidence and belief in Williams to provide good cover for Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson.
