Liverpool journalist Paul Gorst has shared some thoughts on the Merseyside club’s transfer plans for the upcoming summer transfer window.

This comes after Gorst recently made an appearance on the Liverpool Echo’s Blood Red Podcast to talk through the latest news topics concerning the Reds.

2018/19 season quiz: How many points did Jurgen Klopp's side accumulate in the Premier League?

On the topic of the upcoming transfer window, Gorst shared his thoughts on what he would like to see Liverpool do and what their current financial situation is.

He said: “We can’t overlook the fact [of] the financial problems that will be suffered across the entire sport due to what’s happened over the last few months, and I do think a lot of people are a bit blasé about that, because they don’t see the figures, then they think that [the problems are] not really there.

“Liverpool are paying out a wage bill which is one of the biggest in the sport of £310 million, without earning a penny between March and June, around about £77 million on wages and a further £25 million since the return of action last month, on top of that, they’re losing about £3 million per home game because no fans are allowed in.

“They’ve got TV rebates that they will have to be forking out for soon as well. So, it’s not as simple as just digging into a transfer war chest. I think sometimes that is overlooked, but in a normal ideal world, I would be looking at an additional left-back and someone across that frontline.”

Would you be disappointed if Liverpool didn't sign anyone this summer?

It was recently reported that the summer transfer window ‘will be open for 10 weeks between 27 July and 5 October, subject to FIFA approval.’

However, as Gorst mentioned in the podcast, despite him pointing out the areas and positions he would like to see Liverpool strengthen in this summer, there will be financial factors that will need to be taken into account before any incoming transfers.

TIF Thoughts…

It will be interesting to see how Liverpool and any other clubs in the Premier League will operate in the upcoming window.

But looking at how Liverpool are currently at the top of the Premier League table with a big points gap above Manchester City in second place, maybe they wouldn’t need to make that many big changes to their squad for next season.
