Owen Thomas has slammed Premier League referee Paul Tierney after the 39-year-old took charge of Liverpool versus Aston Villa at Anfield on Sunday.

The Reds defeated Dean Smith’s side 2-0 thanks to goals from Sadio Mane and Curtis Jones but despite Jurgen Klopp’s men re-establishing their 23-point lead over Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City, Thomas was in no mood to allow what he believes to be a poor performance from the referee go unmentioned.

Speaking on the post-game edition of the Blood Red podcast, he said: “I’m barely going to mention Paul Tierney today other than to that say, in my opinion, he is yet another certified member of the incompetent buffoon club. By my count, he missed three penalties today, two for us, one for Villa and several free kicks, mainly for us.”

TIF Thoughts…

Judging by his comments, Thomas certainly wasn’t impressed by the referee’s display. Tierney has taken charge of 22 Premier League fixtures so far this season during which he has brandished 63 yellow cards and shown three red cards (via premierleague.com).

The Lancashire-based official has taken charge of Liverpool’s fixtures against Sheffield United, Bournemouth and most recently Aston Villa at Anfield (as per Transfermarkt.co.uk). Fortunately for the Reds, the referee’s performance didn’t prevent them from picking up all three points as they look to amass as many points as possible between now and the end of the season.

Despite having already been crowned champions of England, Liverpool still have a chance of surpassing Manchester City’s 2018 points tally of 100. The Reds currently have 89 points and with five fixtures remaining, there are still another 15 up for grabs.
