2018/19 season quiz: How many points did Jurgen Klopp's side accumulate in the Premier League?

On the topic of how the current global pandemic has impacted the Merseyside club’s finances, Maguire had this to say on the matter.

He said: “The Premier League will have to give back some of the broadcasting deal to broadcasting rights holders. It’s estimated that it’s around about £350 million. So spread between the 20 clubs, we don’t know whether it’s going to be spread evenly, or if it’s going to be graded in the same way that the prize money itself is graded. But for a club of the calibre of Liverpool realistically, we’re probably talking somewhere in the region of a £20 million hit to the club, then they’ve got five matches at Anfield where they’ve had to give money back and Liverpool make around about £3 million per match at Anfield. So that’s another £15 million, you put those two together, it’s a sizeable hit to the revenues.

“It’s not going to devastate the club, Liverpool are generating more than half a billion pounds a year, but a seven or eight percent hit at present – which could get bigger next season – is going to cause them to be cautious as far as spending’s concerned.”

Despite the pandemic, Liverpool have still managed to win the Premier League title this year and have won it by a big margin over second-placed Manchester City.

TIF Thoughts…

With the Premier League and all other professional English football leagues being put on a temporary suspension for a few months earlier this year, this will have undoubtedly put a spanner in the works for lots of clubs financially as Maguire mentioned in the podcast.

The upcoming summer transfer window will give everyone a good insight into which clubs have the ability to go out and spend on players and who do not.

Whatever the Merseyside club end up doing throughout the upcoming window, their main objective for next season will no doubt be trying to reclaim the title they won this year.
