Ex-Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher joined Paddy McKenna, Dion Fanning and Nooruddean Choudry on a recent edition of The Football Spin podcast.

The Sky Sports pundit spent some time discussing a tweet that was posted by Chelsea’s official Twitter account ahead of the Blues’ 5-3 loss to the Merseyside club on Wednesday.

Liverpool’s clash with Chelsea on Wednesday was the club’s final home game of their successful title-winning 2019/20 Premier League campaign and they celebrated their title win by hoisting the trophy aloft following this clash with the Blues.

Prior to Wednesday’s game, Chelsea’s official Twitter account took a jab at Liverpool as they posted a tweet that included ‘highlights of Steven Gerrard’s slip which ultimately led to Liverpool’s title bid in 2013/14 unravelling,’ as per TalkSPORT.

Gerrard’s slip in this 2014 clash with Chelsea allowed Blues striker Demba Ba to give Chelsea the lead in this game and the Blues ended up earning a 2-0 victory over the Merseyside club, with Willian scoring a stoppage-time goal to put the result beyond all doubt.

Manchester City benefitted from this slip and Liverpool’s loss to Chelsea, ultimately capitalising and going on to win the 2013/14 Premier League title.

Knowing all of that, it may be fair to say that this memory is not a fond one for Reds supporters, and it may not come as a surprise that ex-Reds player Carragher was critical of Chelsea’s decision to post this now-deleted tweet ahead of their clash with Liverpool.

During his recent appearance on The Football Spin, the Sky Sports pundit said: “I just felt it was poor from Chelsea, I knew it’d get pulled down but I just think we’ve got to be careful with these clubs that we almost look up to, these proper big clubs of this country getting carried away with some young kid on social media trying to make his mates laugh and eventually the club have to take it down anyway.

“I just think clubs should be bigger than that. That’s for the fans. That’s for Chelsea fans to take the mick out of Gerrard, that’s for Liverpool fans to take the mick out of John Terry or something, singing on the Kop or singing at Stamford Bridge, not for club accounts, I thought it was a bit embarrassing, if I’m being honest.”

TIF Thoughts…

It may be understandable why this tweet didn’t go down well with Carragher, considering that it brought a negative Liverpool memory back to light on the day Reds fans were preparing to watch Liverpool lift the Premier League trophy following Wednesday’s clash with Chelsea.

However, it may be fair to say that Liverpool got the last laugh here, as they earned a 5-3 win over the Blues in this game and got to enjoy their 2019/20 title celebrations after the final whistle.
