In a recent article for The Athletic, Crystal Palace correspondent Matt Woosnam suggested that Max Meyer could leave the club this summer.

Since arriving at Crystal Palace from Schalke on a free transfer back in 2018, Meyer has somewhat struggled to adapt to English football.

Can you score 20/20 on this Premier League quiz? Starting off easy, who is the top scorer in the Premier League this season?

The 24-year-old came highly rated and was even considered a coup for Palace, having featured at every level for the German national team from the U15 age group up until the senior team, for whom he made his debut at 18 years of age.

However, upon making the move to Palace two years ago, the attacking midfielder has failed to impress over his 44 Premier League appearances for the south London club, scoring just one goal and providing two assists – averaging a WhoScored match rating of 6.49/10 in the club’s 2018/19 Premier League campaign and a 6.22 match rating so far this season.

Writing in The Athletic, Woosnam has suggested that the club are prepared to offload the player this summer and that they are set to take an ‘active role’ in trying to find a buyer for Meyer.

TIF Thoughts…

Despite the 24-year-old’s disappointing statistics, it could be argued that Meyer’s demise is not strictly all his own doing, as the central attacking midfielder may not particularly fit into the 4-5-1 system that Roy Hodgson has deployed most often this season.

This has resulted in Meyer being fielded in a variety of positions this term – such as left-midfield, right-wing and central midfield – but never in central attacking midfield.

In addition to this, although 44 appearances may seem like a decent amount of game time over the course of nearly two seasons, Meyer has only been in the starting XI 21 times in the Premier League – and has only played a match from start to finish on four occasions.

As such, Palace and Hodgson may not have that much of a difficult time in convincing the £7.2 million-rated Meyer to leave this summer.
