On a recent edition of the ‘Baggies Broadcast’ podcast, West Brom journalist Joseph Masi shared his thoughts on Aston Villa centre-back Tyrone Mings.

After joining Villa on loan in January 2019 until the end of the 2018/19 season and helping them to earn promotion to the Premier League that term, Mings made a permanent move to Villa Park last summer for £20m

Who scored Villa's goal in their 1-0 win against Stoke City on the opening day of the 2014/15 Premier League season?

After securing the England international’s signature on a permanent basis, Villa manager Dean Smith said that he was “pleased” to bring the centre-back to Villa on a permanent basis, declaring that Mings would be “an integral part” of their squad for the 2019/20 season.

Villa have struggled in the Premier League this term following last season’s promotion and they currently sit in 19th place on the Premier League table despite having the biggest net expenditure of any Premier League side during the 2019/20 campaign, according to Transfermarkt.

While discussing Villa’s spending this season during a recent edition of the Baggies Broadcast podcast, Masi spent some time discussing Mings and he was critical of the defender, saying: “I do think he is a very, very good Championship defender/lower half Premier League defender – playable in the lower half of the Premier League.

“I think if he was your worst defender – if he played every week in a back four and he was your worst one, you’d probably stay up but he’d have to be the worst one. Massively, massively overrated.

“[He’s] decent, but Villa fans seem to think he’s the next [Franz] Beckenbauer which he just isn’t.”

TIF Thoughts…

Considering how much money they spent following their promotion to the Premier League, it may not come as a surprise that relegation-battling Villa have been receiving some criticism.

Furthermore, as they have currently got the worst defensive record of any Premier League team this season, it may be understandable why Masi believes that Mings – a centre-back who cost the club £20m last summer as per the BBC, is “massively overrated.”
