Football journalist Seb Stafford-Bloor has been discussing Aston Villa assistant manager John Terry.

This comes after Stafford-Bloor recently made an appearance on BT Sport’s Football Writers Podcast which focused on the teams that are currently in danger of being relegated from the Premier League this season.

Who scored Villa's goal in their 1-0 win against Stoke City on the opening day of the 2014/15 Premier League season?

On the topic of Villa and their issues this season, Stafford-Bloor shared his views on Terry and his influence on the team so far this year.

He said: “I have some question marks about John Terry’s influence at Villa given what their weakness has been this season. They can’t stop conceding goals so on what basis is, is John Terry eligible for either a promotion at Villa or a management job elsewhere?

“He’s got to this position and the one thing you’d associate with John Terry at the moment is if he’s in my club I would assume that his primary merit is ‘what can you do for my centre-halves and/or defence, and/or the relationship between my centre-halves and my goalkeeper?’. It’s been an absolute catastrophe.

“I’m sure that isn’t the extent of John Terry’s remit, but at the same time, he’s got to bear some responsibility for that.”

Are you happy to have John Terry as Dean Smith's assistant head coach?

Terry first joined the club as a player back in 2017 on a free transfer from Chelsea for the final year of his playing career.

In 2019, less than a year after becoming Dean Smith’s assistant head coach, Villa announced that Terry had signed a contract extension at the club that would see him remain in this position until 2021.

TIF Thoughts…

With Villa having conceded more Premier League goals than any other team alongside Norwich City this season, it’s understandable why Stafford-Bloor has brought Terry’s work at Villa into question considering the former centre-back had made 748 senior club appearances and enjoyed plenty of success in his own playing career.
