Aston Villa journalist Gregg Evans has been sharing some insight into Villa’s current owners.

This comes after a clip of Evans talking about the possibility of the club being relegated was featured on a relegation-themed episode of The Athletic’s Ornstein & Chapman Podcast.

Who scored Villa's goal in their 1-0 win against Stoke City on the opening day of the 2014/15 Premier League season?

Early on in the episode, host Adam Leventhal played a clip of Evans sharing his views on the club and how their potential relegation to the Championship could impact the club.

He said: “The one bonus that Villa have got, the one positive in their favour, is that they have very ambitious and rich owners in Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens. The two of them want the best for Villa, they want to invest money – and if they do go down, it will be a case of one season in the Championship and back, but it’s easier said than done, as we seen in 2015/16 when Villa were relegated last time. The aim there was to get back within one season and there was financial uncertainty in the second and third year.

“There are issues if Villa go down, but they’re hopeful that if they can pull it off, and it’s all in their own favour, that it won’t get to that.”

Back in 2018, the “American billionaire Wes Edens and his business partner Nassef Sawiris blew into the Midlands, promising ‘significant investment’ into Aston Villa,” according to an article written about them by the Birmingham Mail.

Villa currently find themselves in 17th place in the Premier League table on 34 points, above Watford on goal difference.

They head into their match on the final day against West Ham needing to equal Watford’s result at Arsenal to ensure they stay in the top flight for another season.

TIF Thoughts…

It’s good to hear that Villa’s owners would be looking to help see the club get back to the Premier League as soon as they can if they do end up back in the Championship next season. This shows that they have ambitions for the club to succeed in the top flight and stay there for as long as possible.

However, their main hope for the moment will surely be for Villa to avoid the drop this season.
